Sensory processing problems in children with Cerebral Palsy

Dr Amit Baruaa

The Cerebral palsy describes “A group of permanent disorders of development of movement and posture, causing activity limitations, which are attributed to non progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. Motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior, by epilepsy and by secondary musculoskeletal problems.”(DMCN2005), as it includes sensory based motor dysfunction which may be primary as well as secondary. During the treatment and assessment we as the physiotherapist mostly focus on the motor component in cerebral palsy but the sensory development problems are also the area to focus on for the betterment of children with Cerebral palsy. As a certified therapist both in NDT as well as in SI programs I always based my treatment sessions on both the aspects to give better results in children with special needs.
