The controversy surrounding the use of GMOs and the mixed reactions from the African scientific community have raised several questions about the approach to risk assessment. Environmental risk assessment is a critical regulatory process that must be carried out before GMOs are distributed to farmers and consumers. Since there are limited opportunities in Africa to conduct risk assessments based on sound science, there is an urgent need to promote easily accessible risk assessment methods in the face of the precautionary principle in developing countries, including Africa.
