The referred pain is the subject of considerations in relation to the pain of the

stomatognathic system, however, the mechanisms causing this pain have not yet

been clearly explained. Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), through the mechanism

of referred pain, may also be responsible for the development of pain in the

masticatory muscles. Understanding of the mechanisms of referred pain arising

from the muscles of the cervical spine may be important in understanding the

etiology and development disorders such as temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
